You might think that finding a band name wouldn’t be so tough. In high school, I think we had about twenty band names that we went through in just a few years. Empty Orchard certainly isn’t the best name, but it works. So with these new guys, even though we’re not at any real ‘band’ level yet, I think having a name would help with direction. I don’t want anything too heavy sounding, just something for 3 dudes playing songs somewhere between RadioHead and Soundgarden.
My first thought was Against the Grain – the lead guitarist can play pretty well, and even though something with ‘Against’ in it is either heavy metal or kind of silly, it was a decent phrase. Taken.
Next was ‘The Antagonists’ or something similar – taken . Both Antagonists and The Antagonists taken.
So I started looking through my word-a-day calendar, which I haven’t touched since apparently March 15th (sorry Ligi!). Lots of words about leaves – dichotomous, orbicular, reniform. But not band-name-worthy. Then, I found it – Orotund! It means ‘full in sound; sonorous”. So I look it up. Taken.
New word: Choplogic. Complicated, often illogical or spurious argumentation. Sounds great! Already taken, some band in Minneapolis.
Next word I come across that has any chance – Astraphobia. Hmm. The fear of lightning. Now what’s weird is, when I went over to Ron’s house Sunday and met his fiancé, she talked about the lightning storm the night before and how scared of it she was. It was clicking. Making sense. Not sure a psychological fear is a good band name choice, but let’s take a look online – taken.
And what bunch of A**HOLES took the name Astraphobia? Well, the members of The Antagonists after they broke up. Does someone have the same word calendar as me or what?
Last chance from the word-a-day calendar: Solecism (violation of etiquette; impropriety or mistake). Look it up on Google - taken. This is funny: "Solecism is a progressive melodic death metal band from the south side of Chicago." Progressive, melodic death metal. Sounds awesome.
Maybe something from my personal life – well, we have a compost pile now. ‘Compost Pile’ I couldn’t find, but there is already a ‘The Compost Band’. Hmm.
Even the name Taken is Taken.
So now my lead ideas are:
InSoBoredANation (also my idea for a new blog/website, like boredatwork.com)
Spurned (a lot of songs, after all, are about relationships and all) or The Spurned or something like that, but sounds too heavy or self-absorbed
Umbral Path - the dark region of where the edge of an eclipse follows - nerdy link
Cislunar - situated between the earth and moon
Khyper Belt - my favorite group of asteroids orbiting our solar system
Crater - wow, focusing a bit on heavenly bodies here
Oliver Stairs
Compost Pile
Cesca
ClearField
Cophetua Complex - after the Graham Greene quote from The End of the Affair. Cophetua was the king who fell in love with the barefoot beggar girl. The Complex refers to being attracted to those lesser than you are. In some contexts, it can just refer to surrounding yourself with lesser people, and taking comfort in that somehow. Struck a chord with me, after some relationships, and seeing the choices in men some exes make. :)
MPG, or maybe Smiles Per Gallon
Mount Heaven, a real mountain in Colorado
Something that can be abbreviated MBA, or something else that pokes fun at business major degrees (Mostly Bad Advice)
Roving Charlatan? - Something defining 3 guys who all moved to charlotte from other places (boston, jersey, Chicago) and have nothing else in common
‘the something project’ where ‘something’ is the street that we are on, or codename, like the Manhattan project.
Or resurrecting some quote from a literary work, like my old band More Weight (Giles Corey from the Crucible)
CD Name ideas:
Tommorrow is the Second Day of the Rest of your Life
Any ideas are welcomed and appreciated…
