Golf Champion
I already liked my new job, given the small office, opportunities for improvement, and general not-big-business feel. It also has some nice perks, one being a yearly tournament at the Regent Park Golf club in Fort Mill. Normally I might choose to skip out on a company event, but having never played golf before, and being offered a free pre-game lesson, the choice between 18 holes and a day at the office was pretty easy.

Now you may know I'm no big fan of golf; I don't see it as a sport, or at least any more than bowling, pool, darts and air hockey are sports. It's a game, one that can be played with great skill, and requires phenominal control, focus and accuracy. But with the walking, being carted around, and lack of real exercise - I just don't want it to ever get confused with actual athletic competition, like NASCAR.

No, but seriously - I guess my only real problem with Golf is the massive amount of land it takes up. Sure, the land is beautifully maintained, and better than some Wal-Mart or parking lot...but it just seems like a huge portion of land to take away from nature for a relatively silly little game. Also, many of the courses here in the Carolinas are actually bordering on - and sometimes carving right through - housing communities. It seemed odd driving the golf cart through people's yards, grabbing a lost ball out from someone's garden gnome, and urging children to get out of the way of our team's next shot.

Below is, again, a small collection of photos; these were taken by some employees that chose to ride a cart around, with refreshments (beer). I especially appreciate the stop-motion photos of me during a particularly tense shot (which I obviously botched, by my reaction). Although I started off the day missing the ball completely, and landing my ball in the trees, about halfway through I really got a feel for how to use the clubs and really aim the shot; we even ended up using some of my shots that landed on the green (if was a best-of game).

At the end, we had a score of 65, which we thought wasn't that great; surely, one o the other 9 teams would end up with the prize. The prize is a pink suit jacket that people apparently try very hard to avoid winning. However, we won by one stroke, netting us the medal and $40 gift cards. Not bad!
